Five keys to planning a bespoke walk-in closet

Before talking doors and finishes, a good walk-in closet is decided by five questions: what you store, how you dress, how much light, what you see and what you don't, and where you sit.

A walk-in closet is not a big wardrobe: it is a room that organises your day. These are the five questions we start every project with at the workshop.

1. What exactly do you store?

Before drawing anything, an inventory: how much long and short hanging, how many drawers, shoes, bags, suitcases. The interior is sized from that list — not the other way round. A closet that falls short after six months is a closet that was measured wrong.

2. How do you dress?

Do you pick your clothes the night before, or in a morning rush? Do you need to see everything at a glance, or prefer closed fronts that hide the bustle? That answers the choice between open walk-in, hinged or sliding doors — and where everything goes.

3. Light decides more than the finish

Integrated lighting that switches on as you open, lit rails and a warm tone (2700K) do more for a closet than any handle. At La Alcayna the central island works because the perimeter light turns it into a display case.

4. What you see and what you don’t

The beautiful in sight (the island, the bag shelves), the functional hidden (laundry baskets, the iron, suitcases up top). That visual hierarchy is what makes a closet feel like a hotel and not a storage room.

5. Somewhere to sit

It sounds like a detail and it is the first thing you appreciate every morning: a bench, a pouf, the edge of the island. If the space exists, we design it into the furniture.
